I've carried this Topic over from NUK2 as I'm currently tracking a local Cuckoo to my area - Selborne. Him, and other Cuckoos, can be tracked on the BTO website. Selborne is currently in the Pig Bush Inclosure area of Beaulieu. His breeding ground last year was a few miles southwest in Hawkhill Inclosure, Brockenhurst, although he hasn't ventured there this year. I've been out several times in Beaulieu this year, but have only manged to hear him on two occasions. The latest update from the tagging map (always seems to be two days out of date though) shows him still flying around this area.

I'm still keeping an eye on Selborne's progress in my area by regularly checking the BTO Tagging map. I am getting the distinct impression that he is having difficulty finding a mate this year, judging by the way he's flitting about all over the place, as indicated by his tracking paths. He doesn't seem to be settling in one particular spot yet . If his erratic pattern settles down I'll venture out to try and spot him but at the moment it's extremely difficult to find him. I usually end up getting near to his location, to only hear him in the distance and quickly disappear again. He's like the Scarlet Pimpernel - (some words substituted in the original quote ): "I seek him here, I seek him there,
I seek him everywhere.
Is he in heaven? — Is he in hell?
That damned, elusive Selborne!"I know it doesn't read as well as the ' Pimpernel' quote, but I think you get the general idea

He certainly does seem to have been the most restless Cuckoo, doesn't he! You don't think he has several girlfriends on the go do you?

Actually Ann, that's a distinct possibility - that never occurred to me until you mentioned it There are other Cuckoos that I've heard in other parts of the Forest, although I'm still not certain if they were male or female calls, but none of those were on Selborne's fight path. But, that's not to say there aren't others there that I just haven't heard

A very apt poem Laurie, you have certainly tried to get a glimpse of him.
No more updates on Peckham so it looks like either his tag failed or he didn't make it.

No news on Peckham sadly. The latest news below from the BTO but I am not sure if it means those cuckoos Sherwood and Cameron are on the move away again, surely not already Latest News Sherwood heading south - 13 Jun 2018 Sherwood is poised to cross the English Channel. During the evening of 12 June, we received locations from his tag that showed he had left Sherwood Forest and was on the south coast, just north of Hayling Island. The next time we hear from him he may well be our fifth Cuckoo in France. Cameron has crossed the Channel - 13 Jun 2018 Locations received from Cameron's tag early on 12 June showed that he was in northern France, in the Foret Domaniale des Andaines. He has travelled 287km (178 miles) from his tagging site in the New Forest. Sherwood is on his way - 12 Jun 2018 Tagged in Sherwood Forest, Nottinghamshire, Sherwood is now on the south coast at Chichester Harbour, 269km (167 miles) south of his tagging site. He might not stay here long but we won't hear from his tag again until Thursday afternoon - will he have crossed the English Channel?

Thanks for the update Jan. I know the old saying of how the cuckoo changes his tune in the middle of June and then it flies away, but you usually still hear them until the end of this month.

A shame nothing's been seen or heard of Packham - not knowing is not easy to understand On the other hand, Selborne is still flying haphazardly around the Beaulieu area of the New Forest. As you know, I've visited the area many times in an attempt to see him, without any luck. I've heard him though, but that's about it. I don't know if he's been successful in finding a mate this year. I can only assume from his erratic flying path that he's still looking, but time seems to be running out

It's a great shame Laurie , that after all this time Selborne still appears to be alone .
I wondered if the Cuckoos ever change their areas completely , fly up to Scotland for instance where i think there are quite a few , ... certainly i heard several around the Glencoe area ...... i think i've asked this in the past Thanks for bringing your story to it's new home:cool:
... and thanks Jan for the updates

It's looking like Selborne is heading back to Africa again now. The latest tagging track shows him on the Isle of Wight. I got to hear him but I never saw him. There's no way of knowing if he managed to find a mate either . It would be nice to think he did though Have a safe journey back.

Well, Selborne is playing silly beggars at the moment. When it looked as though he was starting to make his way to Africa, I see he's now back in the Beaulieu area again from his brief sojourn to the Isle of Wight. I wonder if this means he still hasn't found a mate yet and he's desperate to locate one. His erratic flight path certainly seems to suggest something like that
