As you say Dave, there are glimmers of hope. That description of the flowers of Upper Teesdale is just as I remember it years ago, I remember finding the Spring Gentians with my parents.

It's never quite as bad as the headlines would suggest Eric although there are undoubtedly many issues that need urgent attention, before it is too late.
